One example of Jem's belief that Scout is too young to see
and hear things that are nevertheless appropriate for someone his age comes during the
testimony of Bob Ewell during the Tom Robinson trial. After Bob graphically describes
how he caught Tom "ruttin' on my Mayella," Scout's maturity was brought into question.
Rev. Sykes suggested that Scout should leave, and Jem told her to take Dill with her.
But Scout stayed anyway. Later, when Dill became upset during Tom's testimony, Jem
ordered Scout to take him outside. This time, Scout and Dill both left, meeting up with
Dolphus Raymond before returning later.
Another example
comes when Jem and Dill decide to go skinny-dipping; Scout, however, is not invited,
since it was determined that her appearance would not be
appropriate.
