A narrative sketch is the opposite of an anecdote (which
is a short, short story with a beginning, middle, and end). Instead, the narrative
sketch focuses on character, setting, or mood. It is clearly not meant to be complete on
its on, but instead, is meant to provide the reader with a memorable moment. Narrative
sketches were used a lot during the vaudeville days and, according to E-notes, one of
the most famous writers to use this genre was Washington Irving, particular in the story
"The Devil and Tom Walker."
