The Old Man and the Sea contains two
major stylistic components. The first is Hemingway's classic narrative style: short,
focused descriptions and run-on sentences without commas. These act to draw the reader
into the narrative, keeping interest while avoiding unnecessary pauses or
digressions.

The second major component is Hemingway's use of
internal monologue. Santiago is alone at sea, and so he talks only occasionally. Mostly,
his thought processes are shown to the reader, which gives the dispassionate narration a
more intimate feeling:

Here, Santiago's
internal thoughts are juxtaposed with the narration. He thinks about his options as the
skiff is pulled, and resolves to take some form of action rather than being passive. The
use of internal monologue allows a greater insight into Santiago, and also helps to
establish his past life without having him laboriously explain it to another
person.

What is the importance of changes in the ratio of full to part time employment in assessing changes in the unemployment rate?

A change in the ratio of full-time to part-time employment
makes no difference in a country's unemployment rate.  However, such a change would
certainly affect how we should assess the strength of the
economy.


The unemployment rate in a country does not
distinguish between full-time and part-time workers.  Anyone who has a paid job of any
sort is employed.  Therefore, an economy where half of the labor force works part-time
could have the same unemployment rate as if none of the labor force worked part-time (so
long as the same percent of all workers in the labor force had a
job).


Of course, the economy with fewer part-time jobs
would most likely be the healthier economy.  Therefore, when there is a change in this
ratio, we should assess the unemployment rate differently.  We should note that a change
to a higher part-time to full-time ratio would typically mean that an economy is
struggling, even if the actual unmployment rate remains
unchanged.

Why was Sputnik so important for the Soviet Union?

Sputnik was important for the Soviet Union for two main
reasons.


First of all, Sputnik was somewhat important in
military terms.  By creating a rocket that could reach space, the Soviet Union was
moving ahead toward having missiles that could carry its nuclear weapons.  This was more
important for the Soviets than for the US because US nuclear weapons were lighter and
could be carried by bombers.  By contrast, Soviet weapons needed missiles to carry
them.  Therefore, Sputnik represented a major step in Soviet military
development.


Second, and more importantly, the Soviet
victory in the space race was a major public relations victory.  By launching Sputnik,
the Soviets were proving (they could argue) that they were equal to (or better than) the
US in terms of science and technology.  This gave them a great deal of prestige in the
eyes of other nations.

What were the foundations of the American spirit of free enterprise?

It seems likely that your textbook gives an answer that
you are supposed to come up with.  I say this because this is a
very subjective question and there is no real objective way
to answer it.  So I really suggest that you check your book to see what it
says.


One can argue that the foundation of the American
spirit of free enterprise was the Protestant work ethic that Max Weber talked about. 
This idea holds that Protestants were driven by the idea that work was righteous for its
own sake.  People should work as hard as possible at all times rather than just doing
enough to get by.  This attitude, it can be argued, caused Americans to be very
capitalistic and to value free enterprise.


One can also
argue that it was the lack of class structure that made the US value free enterprise. 
Since in America all people were equal and all people could get ahead, there was a real
incentive to work hard and to be entrepreneurial.  This helped cause Americans to
believe in free enterprise.


Either of these is a plausible
answer and other answers are possible.  I once again recommend that you check your book
for what it says is the right answer.
