Diamond does not propose any novel thesis about this
extinction.  Instead, he simply argues that the disappearance of these large animals
(which were all marsupials) was due to human action.

The
main cause of the disappearance of these animals was the coming of human
hunter-gatherers to New Guinea.  This happened around 40,000 years ago.  Diamond aruges
that the megafauna of New Guinea had evolved in an environment that was without any
human beings.  Therefore, they were not well adapted for surviving once human beings
came to New Guinea.  Diamond (p. 42 in my copy of the book) calls them "incurably
tame."

So, Diamond argues that these large animals
disappeared because they were unafraid of people and were therefore killed when people
came to New Guinea.

In a passage near the end of Chapter 12, Turtle says that
Sydelle Pulaski only uses her crutch as a means of getting attention.  Angela says she
believes that Turtle means that it is Sydelle's way of hiding who she really is because
she, like other people, is afraid of revealing that.  Sydelle thinks Turtle's crutch is
her "big mouth" but Angela thinks it is her braid.

We are
not told exactly what she means, so we have to figure it out ourselves.  We have to try
to determine what it is about herself that Turtle wants to hide.  I believe it is that
she is jealous of her sister.  Their mother gives all her attention and affection to
Angela because she is beautiful.  I believe that Turtle's braid is meant to be
unattractive and unfeminine because she feels that she cannot compete with her sister's
looks.  Because she is worried about it, she reacts by making like she doesn't care
about how she looks.  This is why she always wears the braid.

How is an aspect of more direct performance reflected in Phillips' Machine Dreams?

Phillips' work lends itself to a greater aspect of direct
performance in a couple of distinct ways.  The first is the basic approach she takes to
the work.  In making her characters a "microcosm" of society, she is able to present
their own voices as representative of a faction of that social faction.  With this in
mind, the characters are able to speak for more than themselves, which is why it makes
sense to have the characters read their thoughts aloud.  They are not speaking to the
reader only, for they are speaking for an entire group of American society.  The
internal thoughts of each character and how they are struggling with both society and
their place within it make more sense for a dramatic reading on stage or in spoken word
forum, as opposed to constrained on the pages of a book.  The need for a narrator is not
as present for these characters wish to have their own sense of speech and articulation
outside of what others might say for them.  The opening is reflective of this as Jean is
writing a letter to her daughter, indicating that this is something to be performed or
read aloud and not kept merely on the page.  Articulating Mitch's frustration is
something that one could see akin to Miller's Willy Loman or Wilson's Troy Maxson.  The
idea of a man struggling to hold on to whatever small piece of the world he has as it is
slipping through his fingers is something that lends itself to an aspect of direct
performance.

The above answer is good one. A person usually seeks to
shame another to make himself or herself feel better. By bringing a person down, a
person with self-esteem issues feels better in a twisted way. That said, I will add a
social dimension.

Why does a person have low self-esteem?
Usually a person has low self-esteem, because he or she does not have certain qualities
that he or she deems society values. So, if a society prizes wealth or beauty and a
person feels as though he or she lack in this department, then this person will have low
self-esteem.

If we build on this premise, we can say that
shame also has a social function as well. For shame to work, person must feel the
displeasure of society. So, a person with self-esteem issues may seek to bring another
person down not to to make himself or herself feel better, but to have another person
who is outside of society. In short, misery loves company.
