During the Progressive era, what are some reforms that strengthened democracy at a state level?

The three best-known reforms that were instituted by the
Progressives to strengthen democracy in the states were the initative, recall, and
referendum.  These reforms were not instituted in all states, but they were created
during the Progressive Era in an attempt to increase the amount of democracy that
existed in the states.

An initiative is a law that is
proposed by a private (not part of the government) individual or group.  The people vote
on it and it becomes law if they approve.

A referendum is a
law that is proposed by the legislature and put to the people for a
vote.

A recall is when a special election is held to remove
an official from office before their term is supposed to
end.

All of these reforms were meant to give the people
more control over the governments of the various states.
