This one is going to be difficult to fully assess because
there was the overall feeling that everyone was clumped into one group: The poor. One
cannot overstate the fundamental equality that was present in the Great Depression.
Poverty cut across all social stratification. For example, poor Whites found many of
the same challenges that people of color did in finding jobs. It was not easy. I think
that the New Deal helped different helped alleviate some of this financial condition,
but the effects seemed to be watered down for different groups. People of color, like
poor Whites, benefited from the New Deal because of the creation of jobs. However,
these jobs were first and foremost given to Whites who were looking for employment than
those of color. While all poor people were assisted in the New Deal's belief of
expanding government to increase employment, people of color still found it challenging
to experience these full effects. Women were impacted, as well. Men were the primary
recipients of the New Deal's policy on employment. Women were impacted in that they
were forced to "do more with less" in terms of keeping families intact. However, over
time, it became clear that women were needed as part of the employment initiatives
offered by the New Deal.
