Can a school district list 2 separate positions on my contract? Don't I have a right to know which positon I'm signing up for?My contract says...

To be certain, you'll have to check with your Union
representation and reference School Code in South Carolina.  Unfortunately school code
is different in each state.

In my current district,
although in Illinois, the district keeps a record on file of all certifications.  If the
district were in need of switching you from a classroom teacher to a speech therapist
and you were certified for both, they would be allowed to do so, as they have the right
to transfer you to any assignment as long as there is no decrease in
pay.

Check your teachers' contract under the Section of
Transfers.  If your district has the ability to transfer at will, it may, unfortunately,
be a moot point.  However, you may petition your Union to check into this further to at
least demand that the administration give you a description of your duties as
Teacher/Speech Therapist. If explained duties then contain none really falling under the
title of Speech Therapist, it would be further justification in them removing that part
of your job title.  There is one caution in doing this, however.  If you only seem to be
performing the duties of a classroom teacher, and when checking your contract your
district can transfer assignments, you may want to let it lie.  If you try to force a
job description, they could easily make one up that includes more than you are doing now
in order to justify the Speech Therapist title, and then the title would mandate that
you are supposed to do more than you are already doing.

I
know this is vague and not specific to South Carolina or the contract in your district,
but I hope this helps at least a little.
