There were not really all that many similarities between
these colonies. The major similarity, of course, was that both colonies were
subordinate to the British. Both sets of colonies were ruled by governors appointed by
the British, for example.
But there were many more
differences. Two of the most important of these
were:
- Most of the people going to Virginia were
single people who were there to work on plantations. Many of them were not free. By
contrast, most of the people who went to New England went as whole families who were
there to create small farms for themselves. - The Virginia
colony was settled by people who were there mainly for economic reasons. By contrast
New England colonies were settled more by people who wanted to run colonies according to
their own religious beliefs.
