In order to write
any essay, one follows the same basic steps. First, you need a topic. Your topic should
give you a sense of purpose in your essay. You will need to know what type of essay you
are writing (persuasive, comparison-contrast, etc) and you will need to know who your
audience is (teacher, other students, etc). Once you have your topic, you will need to
brainstorm some ideas. Select one thing from your brainstorm that you want to write
about. Use this idea to generate a thesis statement, or the thing you are going to prove
in your essay. Next, you will want to write an introduction. Start with a hook, or a
statement that will draw the reader's interest. Once you have your introduction, you can
begin the body of your essay. This should contain information proving your thesis
statement. This proof could be facts, personal experience, or other information. Be sure
you use a different paragraph for each piece of evidence. Once you have written your
body paragraphs (at least 3), you will need to finish your paper by writing a
conclusion. This is the last paragraph of the essay and serves to wrap up the topic. In
the last sentence, try to leave your reader with something to think about. See the links
below for more information on writing a good essay.
