Good question! Here are some possibilities to
consider:
Edna is white; Janie is
black.
Edna is wealthy; Janie is
poor.
Edna is married to one man throughout the book; Janie
is married to several in succession.
Edna is happily
married, at least in the usual senses of the word; her husband is a good provider and is
not abusive. Janie never really seems happy with either of her first two marriages; only
when she meets Tea Cake does she seem especially content, and even he abuses her to some
degree.
Edna, at the end of The
Awakening, seems to have committed suicide, and some readers consider her
death a sign of her weakness and confusion. Janie, at the end of Their
Eyes, seems a strong and resourceful
survivor.
Some readers would consider Edna a signficantly
weaker character than Janie in many respects, even though Edna's life is far more
privileged than Janie's.
