Well, we do know that the decision to leave USA, sell his
farm and move to England in pursuit of literary recognition must have been an absolutely
massive decision to make, as it involved a complete change for the life of the poet.
This notion of making a life-changing decision would fit in well with the overall theme
of this excellent poem, which is all about the decisions that we make and how they lead
on to other decisions, and also how we can rarely go back and make another decision in
place of one that we have made. This would make your idea very attractive, if we
consider that Frost may have written this poem looking back on his decision to leave the
USA and his farm and go to Europe. Note the final stanza that could be used to support
this idea:
I
shall be telling this with a sighSomewhere ages and ages
hence:Two roads diverged in a wood, and
I--I took the one less travelled
by,And that has made all the
difference.
The "sigh" that
the speaker anticipates he will be narrating his story with indicates the way in which
he is haunted by his decision but also what would have happened had he selected the
other road. There is no clear indication that Frost wrote this poem specifically about
his own decision to leave the USA but certainly we can consider that this might be what
prompted him to write such a meaningful and incredible poem.
