I have been wondering along the same lines; I also wonder
about the overall health effects of being in buildings where there is wireless services,
because you are being radiated by it whether you are on the computer or not. As I sit
here and type this I can pick up the wireless signals from five of my neighbors, and
their houses are all more than three hundred feet away. Is it cooking my
chromosomes?
One of the key things I have read on the cell
phone studies is that distance does matter - radiation, like light, diminishes in a
ratio that is inverse to the square of the distance. In other words, if you double the
distance between you and the source, you receive 1/2^2, or 1/4 the radiation. Tripling
the distance takes you to 1/9, and so on. For cell phones the obvious answer is to use
speaker phone or a bluetooth headset when you can (all my sources agree that a bluetooth
unit puts out much less radiation than the phone
itself.)
As for your laptop, I did find some studies - the
links are below for your reference. It looks to me as if you should get it off your lap
and use a table or desk. The radiation from laptops seems to emanate mostly from the
sides and back of the machine, so you are probably safer if you sit in front of the
screen and have less body contact with the machine.
I
suspect that the real heath hazard of computers is that they encourage us to be
sedentary. Heart disease is already the #1 killer in the US, and sitting in front of a
computer is bad for you just because you are sitting.
