The National Organization for Women, founded in 1966, used
political action, including lobbying politicians for changes in laws (B), to advance
their goals.
Examples of the causes for which NOW worked in
its early years include the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution and the effort to
promote equal opportunity for women in the workplace. Its original Statement of Purpose
states the goal is to

participation in the mainstream of American society now, exercising all privileges and
responsibilities thereof in truly equal partnership with
men.Contemporary issues with
which NOW is concerned continue to focus on issues affecting women. Some of
these are human rights for migrants and lesbians, access to health care for women and
children, reproductive concerns and care needs, and continuing economic discrimination
against women.
