The "coming of age" novel is also known as the
"bildungsroman" (German: "Education Novel") - a genre of fictional narratives focused on
the changes that occur in the thinking and behaviour of protagonist as he/she
experiences life's problems and crises. By the time Kambili, the narrator of Purple
Hibiscus, emerges at the end of her experiences in two radically different domestic
settings, she has a completely different view of her domineering father's character and
the relationship she has with him. The author makes parallels between the changes in
the political landscape of Nigeria and the mindset of the sensitive and observant
Kambili, who is forced by changing circumstances to give up the essential "truths" that
once guided her more youthful and sheltered outlook. The symbolic connection between
developing girl and country is important to show more vividly to the reader that
experience fosters understanding and, thereby irreversible and essential
change.
